Lighting is a somewhat complex element of any room. In living rooms, it’s less so than in more utilitarian rooms like kitchens, but there are still some important considerations that should not be ignored. Most importantly, there needs to be a sampling of each of the three main types of lighting: ambient, task, and accent. Then after that, they need to be placed at different levels throughout the room. Consider overhead lighting, table and floor lamps, and wall sconces.
Think gray is dark? Think again! Accented with white trim, and in a room flooded with natural light, gray can be soft and refreshing. In rooms like this one that have large windows it's a great idea to keep the furnishings simple and allow the eye to be drawn to the view.
Once the furniture is in place it's important to think about where to place the accessories. No doubt you will have some window treatments and artwork, and maybe a television and some sconces. Give just as much thought to placing living room accessories as you do the furniture.
There are certain issues that always come up when trying to arrange living room furniture. From creating conversation areas to determining a focal point, to figuring out the best size rug, these tips will help you create a functional and visually pleasing living room.
